What are the cubbies?
While on a short visit to Hecksher Playground, I observed that many
parents and guardians couldn't play closely with their children
because they needed to stay by or keep walking with their strollers.
This was mainly in the section dedicated to 2-5 year olds which is the
right next to the entrance. My idea is to build cubbies alongside the
entrance of the park for stroller and baby bag storage to make it
easier on the adults.
The Space
At the entrace of Heckscher Playground is a building structure that
you walk through, with two bathrooms on each side. Above is a panorama
of the entrance and the amount of space it holds. Pictured below are
the empty walls of the entrace that we can utilize to build cubbies.
Picture this!
Through research, I found that the average one-seat stroller is about 45 inches in height and length and about 25 inches in width. Each cubby is about 50 inches deep, 30 inches wide, and 50 inches tall. This will allow a majority of the strollers to be pushed inside without needing to be folded. I also added a 15 inch shelf on top and coat hooks for extra storage.
I wanted this design to be simple because it is only for temporary storing. The location is perfect because you have to pass through the building to both enter and exit. For two-seater strollers, they can still be stored if folded up.
Below, I illustrated both the interior and exterior of the cubbies. The locks would be self-serve digital systems similar to the Package Concierge® retail locker systems. I chose eye-catching and playful colors to match the young age group and to emphasize an addition to the park. On the front of the cubbies, I designed a simple phrase: "go play! i'll watch your bags!" in a round and friendly typeface. This serves reassurance and a reminder as to the purpose of a playground!
